How To Build A House as Owner Builders

Welcome to “How To Build A House”. Or, depending upon how this experience goes, we’ll decide at a later date whether the title should be revised to “How NOT To Build A House 101″. We are J and E, a couple who have decided to be our own general contractor while building our house in Datil, New Mexico.

This construction project first began as casual conversations over adult beverages 5 years ago, so to say that June, 2011 is the start date for our new home would be to discount 5 years of thinking, learning, planning and saving. But June, 2011 is the month that actual construction work, such as laying out stakes and digging a footer, will finally begin.

The goal of this blog is to share our experiences for 2 reasons. First, to keep our friends and family (those who check on our progress from time to time and have been disappointed in our lack of “real” progress these past couple of years) updated on our home building adventure, and secondly, to share that adventure with others who may be thinking about embarking upon a similar construction project.

Enjoy!

This is great news, we will be following your progress – how are you doing with the smoke from the wildfires?

    • J&E says:

Hi Denise, so glad Pam shared the blog link! The smoke sort of comes and goes. Today it is medium-thick, but yesterday we got a very clear-air day. It seems when the wind dies down (great for the firefighters), the smoke picks up.

Hey! Let me know what happens with the engineer. Ted enjoyed the blog too. All good with the plumber?

Hey! You are commenting on things we haven’t posted yet to the blog, creating mystery and intrigue for our many (hee hee) readers who now wonder what you’re talking about! For now, we will say that things are moving along and we will know how it will all shake out very soon. Will update more this week-end.
